Reading Articles
Currently in it's infancy there is no browse mechanism on the Hydrowiki site. This will be added as content is added to the site. To view an article type your search term into the box search box on the left side of the screen. If it matches content the matching article will appear in the list. If not you will be given the option (if you are a logged in user) of adding a page to the wiki.
Adding an Article
An article can be created in several ways. The simplest is to search for a topic, i.e. Groundwater.
If the search term doesn't exist in the Hydrowiki you will be presented with a link too "Create this page".
Another way of creating a page is to put in an internal link to a page that doesn't exist, i.e. Blank page
Editing an Article
To edit an existing page click the "edit" tab at the top of the screen which will take you to the editing interface where you can make changes to the content of the page.
The Editing Interface
The Edit Interface consists of a textbox with a basic formatting toolbar above. Content is typed or pasted into the text box and then formatted by selecting the relevant text in the textbox and clicking on the appropriate tool bar button. Those buttons include, Bold, Italic, Internal links (i.e. Links within the hydrowiki), External links (include "http://"). a Headline or Section header, an image tag (see embedding images below, and a few others. Hovering over the button will show a tooltip label for the button.
Other basic formatting can be accomplished using simple tags. For example:
- Preceding a line of text with an asterisk "*" will format that text as a bulleted list item
Notes on Editing: The Hydrowiki uses the common WikiMedia software so if you are familiar with editing on Wikipedia projects the process is the same. Within the edit interface you can type or paste the content. It will accept only ASCII characters in this interface so all formatting that had been applied in an MS-Word document, for example, will be lost. There is a Macro available for use in Word (2000, 2003, 2007) that can be used to convert Word Documents to text that can be pasted into the wiki editing interface. Information is available at this link. http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Word2MediaWikiPlus
Article Sections
An article can be divided into Sections which provide headings for porions of the article and will provide an automatically created table of contents for the page as viewed above. The above "Article Sections" header was created by typing: ==Article Sections==
Linking to other pages
You can link to other pages either internal to the Hydrowiki or external links in the following manner
| What it looks like | What you type |

Adding Images
Adding Images is a two step process. First the image, in JPEG or PNG format, is uploaded to the server and then a link is created in the document.
To Upload an image:
Follow the "Upload file" link in the navigation bar at the left of the page (hint: right-click this link and select open in new window and you won't loose your place in the current article). At the upload file page click Browse to navigate to the appropriate image on your hard drive. Verify, and make note of, the desired Destination filename and text summary of the image and click Upload file.
To Embed an image in a page
At the proper position in the article create a link in the following form [[Image:file.jpg]] or [[Image:file.png][Alt text]]. For example, the following [[Image:Hydrologo.png]] will produce:
