A control volume is an arbitrarily determined volume of space through which a fluid flows. By applying the laws of conservation of mass and energy to the control volume it is possible to determine various properties of the fluid. Source: Chow, Vin Te. Applied Hydrology. McGraw Hill, 1988. pg 6.
